Wonder Festival Summer 2010 Wish List

Tokyo Wonder Festival or most commonly known as Wonder Festival ((ワンダーフェスティバル) or WonFes (ワンフェス, wanfesu) is an event held twice every year: Summer and Winter. The purpose is to show various garage and/or resin for future releases. At the same time, various sculptors show off their creations in wonder showcase, however, our attention were mainly focused on major manufacturers such Alter, Good Smile Company, Max Factory, Kotobukiya, Griffon Enterprises, MegaHouse and many more.

We all wonders what kind of figures/nendos/figma will be released in the near future. So far we can all agree that we may need to file for bankruptcy before the end of this year ^^;. Ok, maybe not all but I know I am going to. Without further ado, here is my wish list from WonFes Summer 2010.

Hitagi from Bakamenogatari

Lovely pose from Hitagi. Her trademark staple makes her even more adorable and her pose was taken from the covert art of DVD volume 1. She is not yet painted so I will have to see if she will be worth buying, although, she is looking good so far.

Fate Testarossa in casual version

Alter does know their customer really well with this Fate Testarossa casual version not along after Fate Testarossa ~Phantom Minds~ is available for pre-order. Is this a way for milking $$$ from Nanoha the movies ? It sure does work on me.

Nodotchi (のどっち) and Koromo from Saki

I enjoy the series so that is why these figures are in my wish list. I may pass on Koromo but Nodotchi looks great and promising. Looks like there are quite  few details on her clothing. Not to mention her wings and scarf makes her more appealing.

Phantom Xecty from Shining Wind

Now this looks very interesting since she looks top-less and her ‘top’ part is sculptured with great details ^^ . Since this is Kotobukiya, I have to look at painting quality before deciding to get her since it’s most likely 50-50 chance.

Alicia Melchiott from Valkyria Chronicles

Now, this one is a pure win. I’ve been longing for Alicia figure from any of well-known manufacturers since I played the game and watched the anime many months ago. The anime version is not as good as game and the game received several recognition as the best strategy game. This is definitely in my buy list and I will take my chances with Kotobukiya.

Mina Tepes from Dance in the Vampire Bund

For those who have watched anime, I am sure you remember her seductive pose at the end of anime ending. DFC and loli fans must be really excited to acquire her as their collection. Her pose is the most appealing point for me and which is why she is in my wish list ^^.

Yuri and Tenshi from Angel Beats

This is a tough decision. I have to choose between Yuri and Tenshi when the time comes. Tenshi’s pose is more appealing to me ^^.

Nemu Asakura from Da Capo

As a fan of Da Capo series, this nendoroid of Nemu Asakura is too good to pass it up. It includes the white cat (I think?) that always appears in Da Capo series. I couldn’t recall what its name >.<. I rarely buy nendoroids since I am not into those but I do make exceptions in case of my favourite series.

Nanoha Takamachi

And of course more Nanoha from the first movie as if we don’t have enough figures from Nanoha series already. She is only 1/12 scale but she takes a lot of space with her magic circle and divine buster pose.

Fate Testarossa

Since Nanoha and Fate go hand in hand, releasing only Nanoha sounds little bit weird so here goes another Fate. Majority of people probably will go with Fate but personally, I would choose Nanoha because her divine buster pose.

Rin from Fate/Stay Night series

Didn’t expect to see more figures from Rin especially in Unlimited Blade Works. Her hair is just great. Must be really hard trying to sculpt her hair.

Hatsune Miku Tony's Illustration version.

Her pose is taken from Tony Taka’s illustration in form of desktop wallpaper. You can get it from here. Her stunning pose is probably the highest appeal point in this figure. I am not a fan of Hatsune Miku per say but I do enjoy Tony Taka’s work so depending on the price, I most likely will be getting her.

Dark Sakura from Fate/Stay Night series

Best dark Sakura that I have ever seen and look at her clothing. There are a lot of details and pattern on her clothing. This is a must buy for me.

Mina Tepes ~Awakened Version~

Earlier, you have seen Mina tepes in her loli form and for those who are not a loli fan, you can rest assured that there will be awakened ver. of Mina. Her pose looks promising so far and I cannot to take a look at her painted.

Dizzy from Guilty Gears

Now ,  this is something that you don’t see everyday. A figure from Guilty Gears game and they chose the best character in Guilty Gear. I can only imagine the amount of details/efforts in the making of this figure since technically it’s a 3-person figure:  Devil/Necro, Dizzy and Angel.

Strike Witches 2 (ストライクウィッチーズ2) First Impressions

Yoshika Miyafuji and CS, 501st Joint Fighter Wing ie. the sukumizu crews are back for the second season of Striker Witches. A quick summary for those who have not watched season one, the story sets in mid 20th century and it’s about fighting to save the world from Neuroi, a mysterious entity that tries to conquer the world.

Back in the day, there was no Strike unit so they used brooms 🙂

To prevent Neuroi’s invasion in Britain, 501st Joint Fighter Wing is formed and consisted of many Witches from different countries around the world (interestingly, they all speak Japanese ^^;;). To improve each Witch capability, she is equipped with a Striker unit (hence the name, Striker Witches).

In season two, Italian peninsula was taken over by Neuroi and 501st Joint Fighter Wing struggles to take it back. The new breed of Neuroi has tougher armor, higher regeneration ability and moving core. First episode starts with scenes with Yoshika in her hometown and her daily school life. Her peaceful life is disturbed by the arrival of a letter from her dad, Dr. Miyafuji who are supposed to be dead.

I love this scene of Sakura flower.

Being a curious girl she is, she goes to a military base nearby looking for Major Mio Sakamoto who was her supervisor, mentor and idol back in season one. Unfortunately, major Mio is  currently out ,however, she sees a new type of Striker unit.

A lot of parts/names in Strike Witches are taken from actual history. For example, Battleship Yamato served Japanese Navy army during World War II.

While she’s reminiscing the day she spent with 501st Join Fighter Wing in Britannia, an emergency message was received at the base mentioning that Neuroi appears in Venezian airspace and Venezia falls to the hand of Neuroi that same day. To response Neuroi, Romagna 504th Joint Allied Wing engaged the enemy and has suffered massive casualties. One of Yoshika’s friend , Lynette Bishop is part of 504th and mentioned that they didn’t have enough Witches to defend.

”]Suddenly, Major Mio appears and told Yoshika to leave the place at once. To support Europe, Mio prepares to leave for Europe immediately. Being told to go away does not make Yoshika giving up after seeing Major Mio is about to leave for battle against Neuroi despite the fact that Major Mio can no longer use shield. Mio feels that Yoshika had done enough in previous battle which was why she told her to leave.

Mio may not be able to create a shield anymore since she is over 20 years old, but, with her new forged sword, she won't need a shield.

An interesting point about the second season is that Mio was not voiced by the same seiyuu and for the second season, Mio’s seiyuu is not a well-known one and she also sings the ED song in episode one and two. Another interesting point is the animation produced by AIC instead of Gonzo. Does Gonzo still exist? Last time I heard they almost went bankrupt. AIC seems to be doing really well this summer since a lot of summer anime is produced by them. Quality wise, I don’t see much different between AIC and Gonzo; second season is well animated.

New Neuroi

During the first episode,  fan service was kept to minimum surprisingly with occasional panty shots when transforming to a witch , although, it cannot be denied that there may be a lot fan service in this series in future episodes.

An anime girl with a sword is really the best 😀

Aside from sukumizu factor, story line does not offer much other than the usual ‘Saving the world’ theme similar to 912030913901230192 anime out there ^^;; so I put this under ‘one time watch’ category since  I will most likely watch it once. However, despite all of those, you may still enjoy watching this anime but don’t expect too much, otherwise, you’ll find yourself be disappointed.

Sekirei ~Pure Engagement~ (セキレイ～Pure Engagement～) First Impressions

Minato and Mutsubi cs are back for more harem in Sekirei ~Pure Engagement~. It has the same amount of harem as season one which probably will intrigue some of you into the series. On the other hand, if you are not a fan ecchi/harem theme anime then you may want to stay away from this series.

Can you guess whose butt it is ? ^^

Not saying this is a bad series (or maybe it is ?)  but I would rather say that this is the kind of series that you watch only when you have no other anime to watch or , thus, it can be skipped easily if necessary or visit wiki for a short summary of what is going on. I recommend that you read the manga instead of possibly wasting 25 minutes per episode of your time ^^:; .

Nothing excites me more than an anime girl with a sword. If only she's made into a scaled PVC figure ^^;;

Even though this is a sequel of Sekirei, you don’t necessarily need to watch the first season before the second season. In the first episode, it summarizes season one for couple minutes for those who haven’t watched it yet so new viewers can follow the plot easily.

Karasuba just loves blood. Another character that should have been made into a scaled PVC figure. Come on Alter, GSC ^^

Aside from multiple battles between Sekireis, the majority of scenes is about Minato and his Sekirei living under one roof in Izumo Inn belong to Miya, the landlady. A lot of fortunate “incidents” as one may say befall between Minato and his Sekireis ,thus, it categorizes itself as  harem/ecchi theme anime since it consists of one male protagonist surrounded by many females.

Miya, Sekirei #1, is the strongest among all other Sekirei.

Now, this is a question for all my readers out there. When you just started watching anime, did you enjoy harem/ecchi type of anime ? and as time goes by (and getting older), do you find it that you  are less interested in harem/ecchi anime ? That seems to be my case as I find myself getting pickier as a day goes by.

Shukufuku No Campanella (祝福のカンパネラ) First Impressions

Summer Anime 2010 quest shall be continued with another series called Shukufuku No Campanella. This anime poses a lot of questions when I was watching it as I couldn’t predict what the anime is all about.

One time, it looks like Aria series; it’s all about slice of life. On some other time, it also looks like something along the lines of Tales series/Ragnarok Online/ Star Ocean which is an advanture type.

Thus, my opinion somewhat lies in the middle because I find that slice of life anime like Aria (Aria’s fans, please don’t hate me ^^;; ) is boring and I do enjoy adventurous like anime like Tales series for example even though they are not the greatest anime out there.

Leicester Maycraft and Carina Veritti are some of the protagonists in this series. Carina is overly obsessed with Leicester

The anime starts with introducing each characters with fancy name tags/boards which I found them unnecessary. Carina, one of the main protagonist, is obsessed Leicester and he lets her touching his hand so that she can be the first person who touches his hand for that day. This is really weird me out >_<.

This view really reminds you of Aria, doesn't it ?

The rest of the episode basically is about bunch of friends hang out together ad have fun. That night they have a plan to watch a meteor shower on the roof top of a cathedral. Based on the first episode, don’t expect too much from this series, chance is you will be disappointed.

Oasis adventurers clan where Leicester works as an item technician

Animation wise, it’s high quality and top notch as expected from an anime taken from an eroge. Each character is very well-drawn and the backgrounds are details. If you need a reason to keep watching this anime, animation is your answer. It kept me finishing the first episode ^^;; and for some weird reasons, there is no panty shots or ecchi scenes in this episode.

Highschool Of The Dead First Impressions

Another summer anime 2010 just recently caught my attention when I was browsing through my usual direct download site. I found this anime with interesting title: “Highschool of The Dead” and mostly known as HOTD. Now, I thought this would be just another ghost story kind of anime and could I be more wrong wrong ?

The story is about two highschool students as the main protagonist named Takashi Komuro and Rei Miyamoto and how they survive in the world infected with an unknown disease/virus that can turn a person into an undead. Takashi, Rei and a group of students manage to survive the initial outbreak and continue on a journey to find out what is going on.

Now, if you think about it for a second,the story plot does sound familiar especially for my self since I am a fan of Resident Evil movies. For those who never watch Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Apocalypse or Resident Evil: Extinction, the story revolves Alice and Umbrella Corporation who creates the T-virus. Something happened one after another and it causes an outbreak throughout the world.

Suck...... Suck...... Suck.....

Another similar example would be 28 Days Later or 28 months later. An outbreak causes by a virus named ‘Rage’ in Britain which almost wiped the entire Britain population. Could it be that Highschool Of The Dead is derived from these two movies ?

I think this series looks promising when I watched it for the first couple minutes then I saw panty shot -_-. Every time I saw a panty shot, it serves as a sign that I should avoid the series,however, seeing that story plot is quite my liking, I’ll give it another try before judging further. Hopefully, they remove those panty shots ^^; (Hey, don’t hate me. I used to enjoy those panty shot but that time is already passed >.<)

Mmmmm..... battle damage. It would be nice if we are getting a 1/7 or 1/8 PVC figure of these two.

Animation wise, I think I expect nothing less from Madhouse animation studio. The animation quality is really high especially the opening and ending. I can see a lot of work and time had gone into the making of its OP and ED or rather too much has gone into OP and ED ^^;;.

What a way to start an anime series. A sign that the series must be a gloomy one.

Fate Testarossa -Phantom Minds-

My wallet is getting thinner and thinner these days, more preorders left and right. October this year, I may need to file for bankruptcy since they are quite a few figures released on that month. The next month after, November, another high profile figure is being released which is no other than Fate Testarossa -Phantom Minds- (Nanoha The Movie 1st edition).

She is just gorgeous. I just love her hair and jacket as if she's flying in the air

She has a few Bardiche form to pair with so figure photographers can expect many poses from her ^^

It looks like that she will take a lot of space on your figure shelves ^^:;

Usefull stand to hang the Bardiche while they are not being used.

Amagami SS (アマガミSS) First Impressions

Amagami SS is a romance type of anime that tells a story surrounding Junichi Tachibana, our main protagonist and six heroines whom each of them will have their own screenings. Being stood up on his last Christmas Eve, Junichi is having a hard time to forget about it and let it go, however, he is inspired to make everything different this year Christmas Eve.

She is one of the heroine in this series and she is your typical school idol, pretty and well-liked by everyone

First couple minutes in the first episode, I couldn’t help it but started thinking about Kimikiss Pure Rouge. Not only in term of story plot but also the characters’ design and guess what, after a quick trip to Anime News Network, the character designer is the same person as the one in Kimikiss Pure Rouge. My hunch was right after all ^^. As with Kimikiss Pure Rouge, Amagami SS is also a visual novel adaptation

This screenshot will surely remind us of Kimikiss Pure Rouge assuming you have watched it before.

Dug up my anime database and took a screenshot of Kimikiss Pure Rouge opening. The similarity is just amazing.

In the first episode, the main heroine is Haruka Morishima so it’s her story arc. Her character gives similar vibes as Mao-neechan in Kimikiss Pure Rouge.

I think I would enjoy this anime as I enjoyed watching Kimikiss Pure Rouge and high school romance is always a great watch. The first episode ends in such a way that makes me wanting more so it’s a good sign that I will continue watching it.

One can only dream to have her riding on top ^^; but our main protagonist, Junichi, apparently has incredibly amount of luck

On the other hand,  this may just be another high school romance type of anime and the story plot is usually shallow. In addition, since it’s only 13 episodes, I am little concerned that each heroine won’t get enough screenings (two episodes per heroine), thus, there will be minimal character development and the audience won’t get to know each heroine better.

Junichi's imagination is running wild after Morishima senpai told him that Miya, his sister, is like a kitten that she would love to play and take a bath with.

Nendoroid Saber: Super Moveable Edition

Being away from home for three weeks, I am really behind with figures pre-orders and releases. I went through Hobby Search site for pre-order list and found this Saber nendoroid for pre-order for 3,810 yen. It’s slightly more expensive than normal nendoroid but it’s Saber ^^.

This nendoroid has an interesting base and stand. The stand is similar to what is used in figma and I guess that’s what makes it slightly more expensive than other nendoroids.

This nendoroid includes three types of face and one of them is the tantrum face. It made chuckle a bit when I saw this and her eyes remind of the face of Saber Lion nendoroid.

In addition, the packaging also includes her sword Excalibur, Caliburn and “Invisible Air” version so there are quite a few parts to play around with.

Another face that comes with the packaging is a smiley face as seen above.

Above is the angry face that also comes with the packaging.

Not only that you will get Excalibur and Caliburn, you will also get her Scabbard (Noble Phantasm : Avalon).

From what I  can see that the price seems to be justified with the amount parts you got and not mention the figma-stand alike so you can have her doing a lot of poses. She is available for pre-order from Hobby Search, HLJ, Play-asia, Toylet, Jlist.

Final Fantasy XIV Official Benchmark

I finally have a spare time to run FFXIV Official Benchmark which was released last month. I scored 2410 on High Res and 4089 on Low Res. Note that the benchmark only utilizes a single core and a single video card thus having a dual/quad/8/12 cores system or SLI/Crossfire setup won’t give you any extra benefits.

FFXIV Benchmark score - Low Res (720p)

For your reference, here is the scale (use your low-res score as a reference):

[8000 and over] Extremely High Performance
Easily capable of running the game on the highest settings.
[5500–7999] Very High Performance
Easily capable of running the game. Should perform exceptionally well, even at higher resolutions.
[4500-5499] High Performance
Easily capable of running the game. Should perform well, even at higher resolutions.
[3000-4499] Fairly High Performance
Capable of running the game on default settings. Consider switching to a higher resolution depending on performance.
[2500-2999] Standard Performance
Capable of running the game on default settings.
[2000-2499] Slightly Low Performance
Capable of running the game, but may experience some slowdown. Adjust settings to improve performance.
[1500-1999] Low Performance
Capable of running the game, but will experience considerable slowdown. Adjusting settings is unlikely to improve performance.
[Under 1500] Insufficient Performance
Does not meet specifications for running the game.

My system specifications are as below:

• Intel Xeon x3350 at 3.2GHz
• Nvidia GTX 280 at 621/1350/1134 (core/shader/mem clock)
• 8gig DDR2 ram
• DFI P35 Blood Iron LGA775 motherboard
• Silverstone Decathlon 750W 60A single rail

As a comparison, I asked my friend to run the FFXIV benchmark and he has an i7 920 cpu at 3.8GHz and the same video card as me. He got 2661 on High Res and 4550 on Low Res. On low resolution, CPU plays more roles than GPU (ie video card/graphic card), while, on high resolution, both are important but GPU most likely affects your score more. As you can see, Intel i7 920 only adds an extra 200 points in comparison to Intel Xeon x3350.
